Senior Portrait Tips

When to Book Senior Pictures in Ohio

Timing shapes the light, the color, and how relaxed your session feels. Here's how to plan it right.

The short answer

Most Ohio seniors book June through October, and reserve their date three to six weeks ahead. Go earlier if you want peak fall color or have a yearbook or announcement deadline — those fall dates fill fastest.

Senior sessions are some of my favorite shoots of the year, and a little planning makes them so much better. I'm Betsy of Photos by B4, and here's how I help Central Ohio families time senior portraits so the light, the backdrops, and the schedule all work in your favor.

The best time of year

Ohio gives you a distinct look every season, and none of them are wrong — it comes down to the feel you want:

  • Summer (June–August) — lush green backdrops, warm evenings, and the most flexible scheduling before school starts.
  • Early fall (September–October) — golden light and turning leaves. This is the most-requested window, and it books up first.
  • Spring (April–May) — fresh blooms and soft light, great if you'd rather beat the fall rush.
  • Winter — clean, crisp, and dramatic for the right senior. Fewer crowds at every location.

How far in advance to book

Three to six weeks ahead is the sweet spot. That gives you the widest choice of dates and time to plan outfits and locations. If your heart is set on peak fall color, reach out in late summer — those October evenings go quickly.

Timing around school and announcements

If your school has a yearbook submission date, shoot at least a few weeks before it so there's time to edit and pick your favorite. Planning graduation announcements? Book early enough that your gallery is ready with room to order prints. When you book ahead, your hand-edited images arrive within about two to three weeks.

The best light of day

Whatever the season, the hour or two around sunset (golden hour) gives the warm, flattering light senior portraits are known for. I build sessions around that window whenever we can, so your timing on the calendar and your time of day both work together.

Don't stress if you miss fall

Great senior photos happen year-round. If the fall dates are gone, a spring or winter session gives you a look that's just as beautiful and completely your own. Let's find a date that fits.
